Childcare Approval Scheme - What Does it Mean for Childminders?
The scheme provides recognised national status for individuals providing childcare that is not otherwise required to register i.e. care provided in the child's own home (for children aged 0-15) The scheme benefits parents who want childcare provided in their own home as it means they can apply for help with the cost through tax credits. What does the Scheme do? - It verifies that an individual has a childcare qualification or has attended an induction course that is deemed appropriate. The website contains a list of qualifications. As a childminder, you are qualified to apply to join this scheme.
- It verifies that the applicant has undergone appropriate first aid training within 3 years prior to the date of approval.
- It carries out an enhanced CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check including a POCA (Protection of Children's Act) list check.
- It costs £96 and you have to renew approval (and pay again) each year.
What doesn't the Scheme do? - It doesn't verify whether the childcarer is eligible to work in the UK.
- It doesn't clarify the age group that they are suited to work with.
- It doesn't guarantee that parents using an approved childcarer are entitled to financial support either via working tax credit or employer supported childcare.
- It doesn't remove the parents' responsibility to make sure that childcarers are individually suitable to look after their children.
- It doesn't pass your details on to the Children's Information Service.
Why apply? - It will give you more opportunities to get work with parents who may benefit from using tax credits for childcare provided in their own home.
- If you want to work with children with special needs, it may be especially useful, as many parents have their home environment set up specifically for their child and may prefer their child to be cared for at home.
