Pandemic "Swine" Flu - Information for Schools, Colleges and Pre-School settings
In the light of the current spread of the virus aH1N1, popularly known as “swine”, and the confirmation of the first cases in Southampton schools, Children's Services and Learning are storing this page as an on-line facility for improving access to up to date guidance on the spread of the virus, and access to guidance notes and circulars we have issued to schools, colleges and pre-school settings on the development of the pandemic. The Council guidance is based upon the advice from our partners in the Primary Care Trust and is consistent with advice from the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the Department of Health and the World Health Organisation.
In summary, whilst unpleasant and quite infectious, we would like to confirm that this virus has not proved a significant health risk for the vast majority of the people who have caught it. Whilst we are moving beyond the containment phase of the pandemic, the original National Health Service (NHS) advice to 'Catch it, Bin it, Kill it' by observing good basic hygiene remains sound. The following two attachments provide general advice from the HPA and the NHS:
